The Three Areas of Christian Maturity

April 16, 2016

Summary

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Mt. 22:37-40

Growth in the Christian life has often been explained in three categories: doctrine, devotion, and duty. Or knowledge, worship, and obedience. Or head, heart, and hands. Because sanctification can often be an overwhelming topic, these categories help us understand what growth in the faith looks like, and assess how we’re doing. While most of us will naturally pursue growth in one of these areas over the others, it’s important to realize that growing in the faith involves maturing in doctrine, devotion, AND duty. Growth in these areas doesn’t contribute to our salvation, but the gracious gospel of Jesus Christ motivates us to get to know God, worship God, and obey God.
