1 PETER :: SET YOUR HOPE… on the return of Jesus

July 8, 2016

Summary

KEY VERSES // Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”| 1 Peter 1.13-16

Our hope colors everything we see. Each person has a worldview, a way in which all of the facts of this world are ordered. For the Christian, this worldview begins with Jesus Christ. His perfect life gives us a picture of what faithfulness in a hostile world will produce. His return in glory gives us a focus for our faithfulness and obedience. Our hope in His victory allows us to join Him in righteousness, doing our best to live out the holiness He created us for. None of these things are possible without Him. If Jesus did not come, we would have no reason to live for anything but our own happiness. If Jesus were not coming again, we would not have the strength to stand in the midst of suffering. If Jesus did not care for us, we would not be able to find joy anywhere except in those places where we manufactured it. We look forward to our salvation, not just as an escape from this life, but as the means to live this for more than ourselves. In this, we grow, and are able to bring glory to our great Savior.
