1 Samuel 20 | Is not the arrow beyond you?

Summary

David and Jonathan had a strong bond. It is a friendship that includes care, sacrifice, and covenant. It is, in short, the kind of hospitality we are called into as Christians. In this story, David goes to Jonathan to inquire about why Saul wants him dead; David is confused by Saul’s hatred. Jonathan acts on behalf of David, and rescues him, even though he knows that David living most likely means that he will never see the crown. He commits himself to David’s good, even if it means acting against his own. Even as sacrifice is lauded in film and through stories, we are most often taught to do what is best for us. This creates a competitive nature between us and others (we see this in Saul). The gospel teaches us that God will create good (even our good) as we live for others.
