Being Minor | Obadiah 1.1-9

November 14, 2016

Summary

The irony of this book is that it is written by what we assume is a somewhat unimportant person on behalf of a defeated nation to a nation that stands over it mocking its losses. It is the weak threatening the strong. Obadiah tells the powerful Edomites that they will get what is coming to them. God reveals that the power of Edom is actually its weakness and the humility of Obadiah his strength. This isn’t just because ‘pride comes before the fall,’ but because God will personally bring justice to this world for every sin. Pride does not get a pass because we have deemed it a virtue; instead, God looks down on those who worship and trust in themselves and says: I will bring you down. It is a gift to be minor. Being minor gives you the correct posture toward God and allows you to avoid the judgment that comes from sin, both in this life and in the one to come.
