The Purpose of Freedom

November 29, 2015

Summary

The Bible talks a lot about FREEDOM, but there is a big difference between our idea of freedom and God’s. The Oxford dictionary defines freedom as “The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.” This is typical of the way we think about freedom: It’s about us doing what we want. It’s about the removal of all hindrances and restraints and the empowerment of the individual; yet freedom according to the Bible isn’t ultimately about us. The purpose of the freedom that Jesus brings is to enable those who experience it to give glory to God. Christian freedom isn’t ultimately about empowering believers to do anything and everything they desire, but empowering believers to do what is pleasing to God. It isn’t this open ended state where we are lord, king, and god and can finally be free to sovereignly rule our little kingdoms. Christian freedom is a state of willful submission to the good and right rule of our Creator and Savior.
