Summary

“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. | John 15.26-27

Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. | Acts 2.37-38

The Holy Spirit is often treated as a blowing wind that comes and goes; present in one moment and gone the next, but is this what the Bible describes as: receiving the Spirit? The term that the Bible uses for the work of the Spirit is regeneration; a word associated not just with presence or power, but with change. The Spirit dwells in us, not just to bring something additional into our lives, but to transform us into something that we were not before. This begins before we believe, granting the gift of faith. The Spirit marks us as belonging eternally as adopted children of God. The Spirit washes us clean with the sacrificial blood of Christ, clothing us for glory; making relationship with a Holy God possible. In this, the Spirit is our assurance of faith; the Spirit is the reason we can be confident that we belong to God.
