Worked to death

August 23, 2015

Summary

In the U.S., 85.8 percent of males and 66.5 percent of females work more than 40 hours per week. Americans work 137 more hours per year than Japanese workers, 260 more hours per year than British workers, and 499 more hours per year than French workers. This is not because we have to; the real reason we work so much is because it is tied to our identity. It helps to create a sense that we are doing something, making a difference. The financial reward is part of this: how valuable am I? It also gives us a sense of control. In the end the value it gives is given to others; those who do not work hard gain from your work. If your value is in your work you will be frustrated, angry, and discontent. Instead of letting work control you, the pundit prescribes work as worship: using your effort as a gift to God.
