I mentioned in a recent post that for years I’ve kept a sheet of paper in the front of my Bible with verses about God’s Word: it’s truthfulness, power, sufficiency, etc. Whenever doubts and questions about the value and necessity of God’s Word begin to creep into my head, I read over this list and find great encouragement and a renewed vigor for studying, teaching, and preaching God’s Word.

Here is that list. If you’d like to print them out to carry with you, they fit on one piece of paper (front and back) with Times New Roman, size 12 font. Or, you can message me (Derek), and I’ll email you the document.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. –2 Timothy 3:16-17

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. –Hebrews 4:12

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” –Matthew 24:35

Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. –Proverbs 30:5-6

“The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.” –John 12:48

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. –Colossians 3:16

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. –Psalm 119:105

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” –John 6:63

How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! –Psalm 119:103

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. –John 1:14

“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” –John 17:17

“If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be broken” –John 10:35

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. –Isaiah 55:10-11

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,” –John 5:39

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” –Matthew 4:4

Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. –James 1:21

…you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for, “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you. –1 Peter 1:23-25

But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it! –Luke 11:28

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.” –Matthew 7:24-25

The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. –Psalm 119:130

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; –Proverbs 2:6

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. –2 Timothy 2:15

Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. –1 Timothy 4:13

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. –1 Corinthians 1:18

For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. –1 Corinthians 1:21-24

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. –2 Timothy 4:2-4
