We See God’s Works post thumbnail image

One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?” | Luke 8:22–25

There is so much to see all around us!  There is so much to learn! Do you know how we learn? We learn by seeing and by hearing.

Can we learn about God that way?  We cannot see Him.  We do not hear Him talk to us.  Then how can we learn about Him?  How can we know Him?

We can know Him through the things He made. Did you ever look at the stars, shining bright in the sky? Do you often look around at the earth, so big and wide?  And there are so many wonderful things on the earth—furry animals, birds, flowers, and little bugs.  There are big wide oceans of water, with thousands of big fish and little fish.

Who made all this? Who takes care of all this? Somebody must have made it all.  That Somebody is God.

Sometimes we hear the thunder roar, and we see the lightning clash.  You and I cannot make thunder and lightning.  We cannot make clouds and rain.  We cannot make the wind blow, and we cannot stop the wind when it blows.  All these things that we cannot do tell us that there is a great God.  He makes the thunder and lightning.  He makes the wind, and the rain, and the pretty snowflakes.

Sometimes we hear a little bird sings.  We cannot give a little bird a sweet song to sing.  We cannot teach him how to make his little nest.  When we see a little bird fly, and hear him sing, we know there is a great God who made birds.

Flowers are very pretty.  They have pretty petals.  There are all kinds of flowers—blue ones and yellow ones and red ones.  Some have a drop of honey-water deep down in their throats.  Some have sweet perfume in their petals.  We cannot make even one real flower, with a drop of honey-water in its throat and sweet perfume in its petals.  Only God can.  So the flowers tell us there is a God.

We know there is a God because we can see what He has done.  We see the things He has made.

One time, Jesus was in a boat with His disciples when a storm came. The disciples were very afraid because they couldn’t control the wind and the rain, but Jesus was sleeping in the boat. They woke Him up and asked Him to do something. So he simply told the storm to, ‘Be still.’ God created the world by telling it to be, He controls it by telling it what to do, and we can see Him by looking at the world around us.

Something to talk about:

  1. How do the sun and moon and stars tell you there is a God?
  2. Can you name some other things that tell us there is a God?
  3. What do they tell you about God?
  4. How does Jesus show that He is in control of creation?
  5. Why are His disciples so afraid?

Bible Memory:

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. | Psalm 19.1
