Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” | Genesis 1:26–28
There are many, many people on the earth. There are men and women, boys and girls. There are “red and yellow, black and white” people. Where did they all come from?
God made them all.
Away back in the beginning, after God had made the beautiful earth, God make one man. He made that man out of the ground. He gave him a wonderful body, with arms and legs. He gave him a wonderful head, with eyes and ears and a mouth. He gave him a heart that beats, and a mind so he could think. Then God breathed into the man, and made him a living soul. God gave man a soul that will live forever. So He made man like Himself. Man was very different from the animals.
God called that man Adam. God made one woman too. He put Adam to sleep. When Adam was in a deep sleep, God took a rib out of his side and made a woman of it.
When Adam awoke, God gave him this beautiful young woman to be his wife. Adam gave her a name. He called her Eve. Adam loved Eve. So there were two happy people on earth – people without any sin at all. They lived in a beautiful garden, with trees and flowers and tame animals. Everything was wonderful and very good.
God made Adam and Eve so that they could have children. He wanted them to have children. He wanted the earth to be filled with people to love Him and praise Him.
After a while Adam and Eve did have children. The very first baby that was born was a boy. Adam and Eve were very happy with this wonderful baby. They named him Cain.
God made all the babies that have ever been born. All the people on earth today are children of Adam and Eve. Adam was our first father; Eve was our first mother. We know all this because the Bible tells us.
Man is the most wonderful of all the creatures God made, because He made man like Himself. He gave man a good mind, to learn and understand everything on earth. Man can even know God. God made man pure, so that there was no sin in his heart. And God made man ruler over the plants and animals. He made man the highest of all creatures.
But people did not stay good. Sin came into the world and polluted all that God had made good.
