Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” | John 20:24–29

Do you remember what Jesus’ disciples said when He made the stormy wind stop blowing, and the big waves stop splashing?  They said, “What kind of man is this?”

Jesus did many other wonderful works, so that many people said, “What kind of man is this?”  Never was there another man who did all the wonders that Jesus did – healing the sick, making the blind see, raising the dead to life, and even forgiving sins! People said, “How can Jesus do such things?  Who is He?”

Jesus had twelve disciples who walked with Him every day.  They listened to Him as He told them about God. One day when Jesus was alone with His disciples He said, “What do people say about Me?  Who do they think I am?”

The disciples said, “Some think You are John the Baptist who has come back to life again after he died.  Some say You are Elias, the great prophet of long ago.  Others say You are another prophet.”

Then Jesus said, “And what you say?  Who am I?”

Simon Peter answered quickly.  He said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!”

Peter knew. How did Peter know? Peter had seen, with his own eyes, the wonderful things Jesus did.  He knew that only the Son of God could do such great works.

And Peter has listened, with his own ears, to all that Jesus told them about God.  Only the Son of God could know so much about God and the Kingdom of Heaven.

Best of all, Peter knew because the Holy Spirit told him.  The Holy Spirit, speaking to Peter’s heart, told him that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God.

How can we know who Jesus is?

What Jesus did, and what He said, shows us who He is.  We can read all about this in the Bible.

And if we believe the Bible, the Holy Spirit will speak to our heats, to tellus that Jesus is the Son of God.  Then we will be sure that He is our Saviour.

Peter and the other disciples saw the works that Jesus did, and they heard the wonderful words He spoke.  We cannot see Him.  We cannot hear Him.  But we can read all about Him in the Bible; and we can believe.  And we can be just as happy as the disciples who saw Jesus every day.

Something to talk about

  1. How can we find out who Jesus is?
  2. How did Simon Peter know?
  3. Why should it make us happy to know that He is God’s son?
