THE FULFILLMENT
As we finish the gospel of Mark, it is important to remember that all that Jesus did was part of God’s eternal plan of restoration planned before the foundations of the world. While we can’t go back before the beginning to witness it, we do have the opportunity to see His plan unfold through the fulfillment of prophecy. This Christmas, we will look at how Jesus was the completion of what God had promised — as the sign, the son, the shoot and the servant.
THE SIGN
Isaiah 7:14 – Matthew 1:23
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.
Isaiah 7:14
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and shall call his name Immanuel.
THE SON
Isaiah 9:6 – Luke 2:11
For to us a child is born,
Isaiah 9:6
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
THE SHOOT
Isaiah 11:2 – Matthew 3:16
And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,
Isaiah 11:2
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
THE SERVANT
Isaiah 42:1 – Matthew 12:18
Behold my servant, whom I uphold,
Isaiah 42:1
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my Spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.
