Jesus is arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin. In this ‘kangaroo court,’ the end has been decided before Jesus was ever brought before them. He shows them that all of this was prophesied before it happened.

Jesus goes with His closest friends to the garden to pray. Their actions there show that they do not have an accurate understanding of prayer – and Jesus response to them shows that we don’t either.

Jesus prepares to celebrate Passover and then joins His closest friends to eat together. As they do, Jesus does two things: He tells them that one of them is the betrayer and He shows them that He is the Passover Lamb that this meal points to.

Jesus continues to talk about the future as He tells of His second coming and the signs of the end of the age. Jesus is doing this to give His disciples assurance of what is to come – along with an urgency to keep doing the work of the Lord until he comes.

Jesus tells His disciples about events to come so that they can put their lives into God’s eternal story. As He gives them a glimpse of what will be, so that they will not be anxious and can endure to the end.

Jesus offers a challenge, a warning, and an example for us in this section. The challenge is to be careful not to use one part of who He is to push out the rest. The warning is to be careful about those who use Scripture in this way, because it will lead to destruction. the […]
