1 Samuel 2:1-10 | I rejoice in your salvation

January 31, 2017

Summary

Many pastors choose to lump Hannah’s prayer in with her story, as her prayer does not move the narrative along. It does, however, get us into the heart of this woman, showing us what an appreciation for God and His work does to the perspective of His people. While God has answered her prayer, her situation is still not great. She still has to share her husband with the much more fruitful Peninnah. Her son is going to be raised away from her in Shiloh. In many ways, she still has much to lament, yet the response we see from Hannah is far from lament. She sees the faithfulness of God to her humble situation as a confirmation of all that He has promised. Her prayer and praise is about much more than a child to a barren woman; it is about a God who is going to rescue barren people to bring them into a fulfillment they have no right to. In God, Hannah sees hope for all who struggle and suffer.
