Introduction | How God leads

January 16, 2017

Summary

Whenever we read the Old Testament, but especially when we delve into its narrative portions, it begs the question: why is this important? Why did God feel the need to leave 5,000 year old historical details about a rather insignificant nation? The NT Gentiles had the same questions and the answer that they got was:

Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. | 1 Corinthians 10.11-13

This is more than just a reminder that history is helpful; it is that the God of the universe has revealed Himself through real-life events and experiences. His truth was so important that He made sure to describe it in ways that touch the human condition. The struggle for us is that this is not our experience; we have to do some work to get into the story and to see the example left for us. Specifically, for the sake of 1 Samuel: how does God lead His people from His throne in heaven?
