Summary
And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” | 39
As the time approaches for Jesus to be killed he retreats to a garden with some of his closest friends. Jesus is highly intune to what is about to occur and the anguish overwhelms Him. This is one of the places where we see His humanity taking its toll and Luke tells us the stress causes Him to sweat blood. Through all of this pressure, Jesus commits to faithfulness. He both acknowledges the struggle: The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak (41), and the strength to face it: nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will (39). Jesus was not free from the doubt and pain and stress that this life presents. Instead, He enters into it willingly, taking on all of the sufferings we experience and He does it in order to overcome our weakness.
