The Spirit in Trinity

May 1, 2016

Summary

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. | John 14.26

And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” | Acts 1.4-5

When God describes His Divine nature to His created people, the description He uses is Trinity. The complexity of God cannot be summed up by simple descriptors and easy to understand phrases, HE IS TRINITY: three persons, one God. The first two persons are expressed to us metaphorically connected to earthly relationships: Father and Son. Even though there are vast differences between God the Father and our fathers and Jesus the Son and our children, these titles help to ground our concept of them. The Spirit is altogether different. Spirit by nature is something that cannot be described. As we approach the person of the Spirit looking for a definition, we will do it by looking at the whole; to understand the Spirit you have to understand the Trinity. Out of this, we will discover the specific part and purpose of the Spirit in the plan of the Trinity to make God known.
