Jesus goes to the garden to be led, willingly, to his death. In this story of Jesus being led away, we are also shown Peter’s denial. The contrast of these two stories is to reveal Jesus’ faithfulness in the face of human sin. We are fickle; He is constant.

Jesus spends the last part of His prayer praying for all those who WILL believe. He prays that His people, through time, experience the unity, presence, and love of God. His prayer is that His people understand what it means to be the people of God and live joyfully in response to this.

Jesus continues to pray to the Father and for His people. As He is leaving, He prays to the Father to continue the work of redemption, particularly keeping them and sanctifying them.
