Summary
One place people look for to find meaning in this life is knowledge; the more you know, the better off you will be. In modern society, we have a wealth of information at our fingertips at all times and we assume this makes us better off, but Solomon speaks from a place of authority as the wisest man to ever live and concludes: For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow (18). This is not to say that there is a direct correlation between knowledge and sorrow; the author is not discouraging education. Instead, he is pointing out that if you have placed your hope in this world, then the more you see and understand about it, the more you will be disillusioned. The only way to truly find happiness is to avoid making sense out of the world.
