Summary
John begins his gospel by making numerous references to the Genesis story, but as he does, he recasts this story with a new character, Jesus. He does this to show that Jesus did not appear in the NT, but had been the reason behind creation in the first place. In order to understand everything else, you have to recognize Jesus.
